The Kenneth Arnold UFO Incident

The history of UFOs are traced back to the stone age, when early cave drawings are done. In the modern world, one of its most famous sightings was the one reported by Kenneth Arnold, a pilot.

It was on June 24, 1947, pilot Kenneth Arnold was conducting a search, with some other men, for a missing plane. He told the Chicago Daily Tribune of his sighting as a series of flashes, similar to a mirror reflecting sunlight in his eyes. Then he saw that the flashes come from incredibly fast objects. He said that the objects looked shiny and silvery, and looked like a pie plate. The most startling thing about them, Arnold recalled, was their lack of tails.

Based on Arnold’s estimation, the objects flew 9,500 to 10,000 feet above the ground with great speed. From Mt. Rainier, he clocked the objects to Mt. Adams, still cannot believe what he was seeing. Arnold later revealed that he knew the story was unbelievable and that no one would believe him.

Arnold reported it to authorities and media was stirred. ‘Flying saucer’, a term we all know about these days, was coined by Bill Bequette, a reporter from East Oregon. The reporter paraphrased Arnold’s description of the craft, which is “saucer-like”, and came up with ‘flying saucers’. They were forced to take action, maybe because media became involved. On July 7, 1947, a few days after the UFO incident in Roswell took place, a meeting was held at the Pentagon.

Although the initial action of the military is to ignore the report, they felt forced to take action because the media became involved. General George Schulgen, Army Air Force Chief for the Air Intelligence Requirements Division took charge and decided to have a follow up investigation on the flying discs reports. The Kenneth Arnold Sighting is one of the first UFO reports during that time and one of the most famous and most credible UFO sightings of all times.
