Tour Easter Island: Moai, Petroglyphs and a Meteorite

The entire island is basically one huge archaeological sight and the highlights are divided into the Western Circuit and the Southeastern Circuit. The major sites line the southeastern coast and include: Tongariki, and Rano Rarku Quarry.

Ahu Tongariki has 15 moai, standing side-by-side on a 200-foot long “Ahu” – the longest ever made. Destroyed by a massive Tsunami in 1960, the moai have been painstakingly restored. From there, the tour continued to Papa Vaka where the largest remaining petroglyphs are slowly eroding. It was very difficult to film, or see, them in a blinding sun.

Last sight of the day was a perfectly round stone that is now thought to be a meteorite. Weighing 1-1/2 TONS, it was brought as ballast in one of their “canoes” … can you imagine?
