Equipped with a radioisotope thermoelectric generator, Voyager 2 was launched from Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral on August 20, 1977. The spacecraft was lifted above the atmosphere by a Titan IIIE rocket and Centaur upper stage booster where it extended its instruments and prepared for the boost to escape Earth’s gravity. Voyager 2 also carries a Golden Record, which contains various sounds of Earth ranging from music to nature and a greeting if any extraterrestrials were to discover the spacecraft which was contributed by Carl Sagan, a founder of the Planetary Society.
Sixteen hydrazine thrusters helped Voyager orient itself as it flew by the four outer planets, two gas giants and two ice giants: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, completing the first real grand tour. Such a planetary alignment only occurs every 176 years, so NASA decided to use the opportunity.
The Voyager spacecraft will continue to transmit signals until the 2020s, when they are both in interstellar space and lack sufficient power to run any instrument.
