Video rewind: May 13, 1981 — Pope John Paul II shot

On May 13, 1981, a gunman opened fire on Pope John Paul II, shooting him four times in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City while he was riding through the crowd, waving.The shooter was caught right away. Mehmet Ali Agca was sentenced to life in prison, but the pope later forgave him and he was deported to Turkey. It’s unclear what Agca’s motivation was for the attempted assassination.The shooting led to creation of a bulletproof glass “Popemobile,” which debuted a short time later.
