The Roswell area is extremely historic.

The Roswell International Air Center (RIAC), which is also known as the Roswell Industrial Air Center, is a city-owned public-use airport located three miles south of Roswells central business district (in Chaves County, New Mexico). From 1941 to 1967, this facility was known as Roswell Army Airfield during World War II, and later Walker Air Force Base during the Cold War. When it was in operation, Walker AFB was the largest Strategic Air Command base in the United States It was the site from which Japan was bombed during WWII. Alert crews stood ready 24 hours with B-52 bombers parked outside with nuclear weapons loaded and ready. The base was closed in 1967. (Shown in last portion of tape.)

It is also well0known because of the Roswell UFO incident, that supposedly happened on 4 July 1947 when a “flying disk” crashed during a severe thunderstorm. The site was also was used to launch stratospheric balloons for Air Force projects.

The airplane from the Roswell airbase, a B-29, was reported to have carried the Roswell debris to Wright Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) in Ohio. The B-29 is also the plane that carried the atomic bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Bockscar, is the B-29 that carried the Nagasaki bomb. The B-29 that carried the atomic bombs returned to the United States in November 1945, where it was assigned to the 509th at Roswell Army Air Field, New Mexico. In August 1946, it was assigned to the 4105th Base Unit at Davis-Monthan Army Air Field in Arizona. In September 1946, its title was passed to the Air Force Museum (currently the National Museum of the United States Air Force) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio, and it was moved there until September 26, 1961.

Roswell Crates – Many reports about Roswell say that a B-29 was used to carry crates from Roswell to Fort Worth, TX and then to Ohio. This original radio broadcast and the original equipment are on display at the museum.

The B-29 Superfortress was a four-engine propeller strategic bomber used by the US in WWII. The B-29 is one of the largest planes used during WWII; it was designed as a high-altitude daytime bomber, but also used as a low-altitude nighttime incendiary bomber.

It carried the atomic bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The B-29 that dropped the bomb on Nagasaki is on display at the Air Force Museum at WPAFB. This Boeing B-29 Superfortress, Bockscar, dropped the second atomic bomb (plutonium bomb), called Fatboy, on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945.

MARFA Video shows the Marfa Lights, a tour of the historic town of Marfa, and the Marfa Lights viewing center. It includes information about viewing the lights and visitor’s comments.

The lights are mysterious and unexplained (but what tourists generally view are traffic lights). Some think they are UFOs, aliens, St. Elmos fire, electrostatic discharges, swamp gas (no swamp), ghosts, or the spirits conquistadores.

The location is near the Rio Grande River and close to Mexico. A historical marker for the town of Presidio, near Big Bend, is near by. It is said to be Americas oldest town¬around 10,000 years old. It was initially inhabited around 1200 A.D., which was more than 500 years before the Declaration of Independence, and it was founded in 1683 when Jesuit priests from El Paso established missions in the area

The historic town of Marfa contains a beautiful, big courthouse as its dominant landmark. A number of movies have been made in the scenic area, such as No Country for Old Men and There will be blood. The classic 1956 Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean, and Rock Hudson movie “Giant” was filmed here.
