The Chamber of Secrets Behind Mount Rushmore

One of the most recognizable landmarks in America, Mount Rushmore near Keystone, South Dakota is the home not only to America’s great heritage but to mysteries and conspiracies as well. Built among the mesmerizing Black Hills, the sightly heritage is sculpted by Gutzon Borglum and features the faces of the four eminent US presidents, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincon.

These enormous sculptors are world-famous, but only a few people know that there also lies a secret chamber right behind the head of Abraham Lincon. A place intended to preserve America’s great history, but now popular as an unfinished tunnel with several speculations and secrets running along with its long passageway. The hidden chamber behind Lincon’s head is prohibited for the visitors. And this sole reason has served as a source for conspiracies to creep out.

Borglum’s Idea Behind The Not-So-Secret Chamber of Mount Rushmore

Borglum, the sculptor of the monument, didn’t want to limit it by only just carving out the faces of the presidents. He thought that doing so would undervalue the magnificence of his art over the years. And thus, he envisioned carving the presidents down to their waists along with a large, carved inscription beside them. It would have enlisted the nine most important events from 1776 to 1906.

But, soon he realized that the mountain didn’t have enough space for the memorial, so he decided to build a secret room behind the faces instead. It was meant to hold America’s historical relics and important documents.

The large room carved into the mountain was designed to be 80 by 100 feet with a granite stairway of 800-foot to reach the room. The vault was going to store some of the US’s most important documents, such as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, a list of contributions made by America to the world, and sculptures of famous Americans. Also, there was going to be a huge bronze eagle at the entrance door and the secret room was to be named “The Hall of Records.”

How The Controversial Vault Came Into Existence?

Its construction began in 1938. Borglum had just started blasting a 70-foot tunnel for his Hall of Records. But, the project was halted due to funding issues as war threatened Europe. However, the US government ultimately led Borglum to wait for the secret vault until the four faces had been carved.

Borglum was still working on the faces when his health started to decline. Unfortunately, he died on March 6, 1941, before his dream could take shape. After him, his son, Lincoln took the charge of finishing the project but couldn’t do so, as the mountain had a limited carvable area and that wasn’t enough. Therefore, the government declared the project finished on October 31, 1941.

A Sneak-Peak Inside the Hidden Hallway

The tunnel that Borglum had pierced into the mountain remained untouched for years until 1998 when the National Park Services decided to place a titanium vault in the floor. It contains vital information on Mount Rushmore, the Presidents, and US history along with biographies of Borglum engraved on sixteen porcelain enamel panels. All these were put into a teakwood case, which was then placed into a titanium vault, sealed with a 1000-pound granite lid, and put in the uncompleted hallway.

The Hall of Records isn’t open to the public and the closest one could go is to the entrance of the chamber, which is too tough to reach on foot, making it a disappointment for tourists looking forward to having a glimpse of the secret room. This leads to numerous unthinkable speculations about the place.

Conspiracy Theories Surrounding the Prestigious But Secret Place

Designed to be a wonderful museum for America’s glorious history, the Hall of Records has now become a bewitching time capsule. The current motive behind its existence is to present the country’s history to future generations and civilizations.

The Hall of Records has preserved many hopes that after centuries from now, a future community will stumble upon this hidden vault and find more about the US’s existence and history. Moreover, while the secret hallway possesses some of the most valued American inscriptions, many believe that there’s more to it.

The Extraterrestrial Connections of Mount Rushmore

Due to the Hall of Record’s tight privacy and prohibitions, some citizens do not hesitate to claim it to be a secret base for keeping aliens. The believers of this theory claim that the government is hiding the proof of extraterrestrial beings in this hidden chamber.

Does it sound like the recent controversies around Area 51? Exactly, something extremely secretive is sure to intrigue people and give birth to unusual speculations.

While there’s no shortage of such baseless believers out there, several UFO hunters and alien researchers, in one way or another, have tried to establish a connection between Mount Rushmore and the unknowns.

According to a publication in the UK Daily Express, Andre Gignac, a former Canadian worker in the United Nations, had once claimed to have found proof of an alien civilization on Mars by examining NASA photos of the planet. He not only claimed to have identified the corpse of an alien but also assert to have found Mount Rushmore-style carvings of ancient Martian leaders in the photos.

Similarly, one Taiwanese UFO hunter, Scott Waring once declared to have spotted a human-looking alien face carved onto Mars mountainside just like Mount Rushmore. These sightings and claims did nothing but strengthen the idea of those who believe that there is a link between Mount Rushmore and foreign elements, which the government doesn’t want us to find out.

Is There A Hidden Treasure in Mount Rushmore?

Another conspiracy about Mount Rushmore’s secret chamber that people usually come across is a hidden treasure. If you have already watched the 2007 thriller “National Treasure: Book of Secrets”, you know what I’m speaking about.

A mystery passageway in Mount Rushmore takes you to a long-lost city of gold, concealed by the governmental authorities. Sounds like a perfect fantasy movie, but some do believe in it. Many of these conspiracy crackers accept the idea there could be a treasure hidden somewhere in the Hall of Records, and that’s why the place is banned for visitors outside the authorities.

Again, we have no evidence and facts to back this theory up. We might not know what the truth is but one thing is sure that the conspiracy theories around Mount Rushmore and the Hall of Records have gained huge popularity and will continue to entertain and charm us as long as the memorial itself exists.
