Matter in our Surroundings and its Properties – Chemistry, CBSE Class 9

We live in a world full of different types of objects that vary in shape, size, colour, odour, taste and other characteristics. Depending upon the object there is a variation in the constituent substances that make it. The sun, the planets, the stars, the galaxies and all the celestial objects of the universe are all matter.

In ancient India, the philosophers or the rishis classified matter into five different categories calling them as “Pancha Tatva”. They are
• Air
• Earth
• Fire
• Sky
• Water

In this modern era of science, we classify matter into categories based on their physical and chemical properties.
