Friday Fantasy Show – ‘The NeverEnding Story 3’ Film Review

Friday Fantasy Show – ‘The NeverEnding Story 3’ – Episode 158

Once more the Friday Fantasy Show looks at a NeverEnding Story film. Yes, they made three of them! ‘NeverEnding 3: Return to Fantasia’ was released in 1994 and
directed by Peter MacDonald, screenplay by Jeff Lieberman, story by Karin Howard, starring Jason James Richter, Melody Kay, Kack Black, Freddie Jones, Julie Cox and Tony Robinson, with music by Peter Wolf.

‘NeverEnding 3: Return to Fantasia’ is the third film following on from the ‘The NeverEnding Story 2: The Next Chapter’, which, you’ve guessed it, followed on from ‘The NeverEnding Story’ which was adapted from the novel of the same name by Michael Ende. Clear? Good.

The film opens with an old man, the Old Man of Wandering Mountain (see I told you), reading from an ancient tome. A prophecy of a day when ‘The Nasty’ will arrive in Fantasia is drawing close. Also described is a savoir of ‘Extraordinary Courage’.

Meanwhile, Bastian Balthazar Bux (same character throughout all three films) has grown older, and his father Barney has married a woman named Jane, whose daughter Nicole doesn’t like having a new family, especially, as she sees it, a dork. Bastian has also started high school, where he has become a victim of the Nasties, bullies led by Slip. Just how are the two worlds of Fantasia and ours connected? Will the ‘The Nasty’ prophecy come true and just who is the savoir with ‘Extraordinary Courage’?

‘The NeverEndings 2’ did well enough at the box office to warrant another movie. Was this a good idea or has the story finally ended?

Which will it be? Watch and find out…
