Exploring the Tombs of Myra, St Nicholas’ Church, and a Sunken City

Located to the southwest of Antalya along the Turkish Riviera the ancient Lycian ruins of Myra are highly unusual in appearance. The tombs are carved directly into the side of the nearby cliff face and look almost palatial in composition similar in style to the ruins of Petra, though far less grand in size and scale.

After exploring the ruins of Myra and the nearby amphitheater we struck off to Kekova where we took a brief boat cruise. Kekova is the site of a historic city which was almost completely ruined and submerged nearly 2,000 years ago. In many ways the city is the embodiment of the Atlantis myth.

The tour rounds out with a stop at St Nick’s (Saint Nicholas’ Church) which is the original church dedicated to the man who later became the embodiment of Santa Claus. The current church now holds St. Nick’s tomb, though most of his bones were raided and spirited off by the Italians during Rome’s glory days.
