It has been speculated that the statues on Easter Island were created by the natives on the island using primitive means. The famous Norwegian anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl first went to Easter Island in 1955-56. In 1962, he said that around AD 1100, the “Birdman Cult”, during a period of 600 years created, moved, and erected more than 600 of the statues from the quarries on the slopes of Rano Raraku. He even quotes that the “island engineers” were able to erect statues up to 40 feet tall, and that they weighed more than 80 tons. They were so clever, that after eliminating every tree on the island, using simple ropes and pulleys, they were even able to hoist red stone cylindrical hats that weighed up to 12 tons on top of their heads.
What is astonishing to me is that, even though this famous archeologist makes the claims, he has no proof. Because he has a Phd, just like the Egyptologist that also make unsubstantiated claims about the pyramid builders, people will go along with their theories of simple primitive tools and methodologies to do these incredible feats, even though they offer not a shred of proof for what they are saying. What saves them is adding people to the equation. Somehow, in the minds of people, and apparently these skilled engineers and Egyptologists, by adding a few hundred people to the equation, somehow, magically, all of this is possible. Yet, for some reason, they cannot replicate what they say, or provide the math necessary to show how it was done.
In fact, since we are only dealing with simple pulleys and ropes, you would think that a grad student would be able to use simple math and end this dispute once and for all. The variables are simple. A large 80 ton stone. A couple ropes. A few pulleys. And of course a team of people that would pull or push these statues into place. Let’s also add in a few hundred years to the equation to make sure they have enough time to get the job done. Yet, despite its simplicity, with all of our modern engineering knowhow, no one has done this, not even those who have tried and failed to complete a small scale model of the pyramids. This clearly shows 1 or 2 things: the engineers who cannot tell you how their theory works are incompetent, or it can’t be done. There are no other choices.
