Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, provided an update regarding the ongoing COVID-19 response plan on Tuesday, after Premier Jason Kenney declared a public health emergency for the province.

Hinshaw confirmed that Alberta had 23 new cases of the virus, bringing the provincial total to 97. She also announced that Alberta Health Services (AHS) would be postponing all scheduled and elective surgeries in order to sustain the province’s COVID-19 pandemic response, and that frontline staff will be redeployed to “other areas of the healthcare system” to ease the demand caused by the outbreak.

Hinshaw tested negative for COVID-19 on Tuesday, one day after she went into self-isolation after developing a sore throat.
