Rosicrucianism

Rosicrucianism is a philosophical secret society, said to have been founded in late medieval Germany by Christian Rosenkreuz. It holds a doctrine or theology built on esoteric truths of the ancient past which is concealed from the average man, provides insight into nature, the physical universe and the spiritual realm.

Rosicrucianism is symbolized by the Rosy Cross. Two Rosicrucian-inspired Masonic rites emerged towards the end of 18th century, the Rectified Scottish Rite, the “Golden and Rosy Cross”, and the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, in which the 18th degree is called Knight of the Rose Croix.

The Gold und Rosenkreuzer (Golden and Rosy Cross) was founded by the alchemist Samuel Richter. The rose may also be seen to symbolize the soul and the cross, the body of the four elements. In other words, the human soul crucified on the cross of the material plane. This rosy cross may be similar to the Egyptian use of the ankh.
