Easter Island

Easter Island, a tiny speck of volcanic land (only about 69 square miles) in the Pacific Ocean is known throughout the World for its famous statues.

The Island’s history is a bit of an enigma primarily due to lack of an organized written language at the time of the carvings and because of the isolation of the Island itself. Carvings inscribed on the walls of the many caves and on the statues themselves have yet to be translated.

No one knows for sure when or why the statues, called MOAI, were created. We do know that by the 19th century all of the statues were down for some unknown reason and those that the thousands of tourists see today have been restored by numerous researchers.

Several theories have been postulated regarding the statues as well as the origin of Easter Island inhabitants. Genetic studies of the people have shown that they are Polynesian in origin.

Unlike Stonehenge, the great stone images have no connection to solar events such as sunsets, sunrises, time or space. They just are.

The Island’s major problem as well as its economic salvation is tourists. Before Chile’s stepping in and declaring much of the Island an official Park, tourists were allowed to freely roam and left behind considerable damage as well as trash.
